Vanishing Scalar Invariant Spacetimes in Higher Dimensions

We study manifolds with Lorentzian signature and prove that all scalar curvature invariants of all orders vanish in a higher-dimensional Lorentzian spacetime if and only if there exists an aligned non-expanding, non-twisting, geodesic null direction along which the Riemann tensor has negative boost order.

On Hausdorff’s moment problem in higher dimensions

Denote by μn = ∫ x n1 1 . . . x nd d dμ(x) the n’th moment of a Borel probability measure μ on the unit cube I = [0, 1] in R. Generalizing results of Hausdorff, Hildebrandt and Schoenberg, we give a sufficient condition in terms of moments, that μ is absolutely continuous with respect to a second Borel measure ν on I. We also review a constructive approximation of measures by atomic measures us...

D-Branes and Vanishing Cycles in Higher Dimensions

We investigate the quantum volume of D-branes wrapped around cycles of various dimension in Calabi-Yau fourfolds and fivefolds. Examining the cases of the sextic and heptic hypersurface Calabi-Yau varieties, as well as one example in weighted projective space, we find expressions for periods which vanish at the singular point analogous to the conifold point. As in the known three-dimensional ca...

Efficient Approximation Algorithms for Point-set Diameter in Higher Dimensions

We study the problem of computing the diameter of a  set of $n$ points in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for a fixed dimension $d$, and propose a new $(1+varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+ 1/varepsilon^{d-1})$ time and $O(n)$ space, where $0 < varepsilonleqslant 1$. We also show that the proposed algorithm can be modified to a $(1+O(varepsilon))$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+...

Moment relations and blur invariant conditions for finite-extent signals in one, two and N-dimensions

The blur invariant features developed by Flusser et al. [Proc. Internat. Conf. of Pattern Recognition, 1996, p. 389; IEEE Trans. Pattern Anal. Machine Intell. 20(6) (1998) 590; J. Math. Imaging Vision 13 (2000) 101] allow for exact pattern recognition between two continuous, infinite-extent signals related by a shift-invariant, centrosymmetric and energy-preserving filter. This paper addresses ...
